Project #8
Odessa Odessey, September 2004
Odessa Odessey invited several people to travel with the Dream Coordination Office on a tour from Vienna, Austria, to Odessa, Ukraine. The preparation for the trip (by bicycle) involved some physical training, language classes in Romanian, acquiring the necessary visa documents and a general openness to adventure. The route was loosely planned and the overnight stops, as well as the distance travelled each day, were negotiated en route. As with many long journeys, participants also had to negotiate fears, tensions, and desires. Four women made the bike journey to Odessa, and one woman met the group in Odessa. The meaning that Odessa and the Odessa Odessey had for each person was shaped en route through the journey toward the city and further shaped by the actual experience of the city for one week before flying back to Vienna.
